'What If?' Season 2 Review — Marvel's Multiverse Series Doesn't Do Enough

When Marvel released the first season of their animated anthology series, What If...?, it was a simpler time. The MCU had flirted with the idea of a canonical multiverse, with hints dropping in WandaVision, Loki Season 1, and, of course, the multiversal crossover event that was Spider-Man: No Way Home. The best thing about the What If...? concept, and indeed, the first season of the series, was the zero-pressure takes on so many of our favorite MCU characters. Like a child playing with action figures, What If...? was allowed to be nonsensical, high-concept, and have zero repercussions for it. For that, it was refreshing.

'Gen V' Isn't the First Time Marie Has Appeared in 'The Boys' Universe

While we eagerly await Season 4 of The Boys, the folks at Vought, er, Amazon, have blessed us with the series' first spin-off: Gen V. Gen V is set at Godolkin University, the feeder school for Vought where only the best of the best Supes can make it onto The Seven. What makes Gen V so intriguing is that it gives us a fresh perspective. We’ve seen the world through the lens of the likes of Homelander (Antony Starr) and Vought, and we’re very familiar with the way The Boys like Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Butcher (Karl Urban) see the world, but never have we seen it from this level. These Supe-students are unaware of Vought’s lack of morals and hold The Seven in high esteem like any other non-Supe civilian. But they all have the potential to join The Seven and have powers of their own, which separates them from the rest of The Seven’s doting fans.

"Bella Ciao" isn't just a pop anthem that the popular series Money Heist thrust into the global spotlight, the Italian folk song is a revolutionary cry. It's a melody that transcends the heist, uniting comrades for their common cause. A symbol of defiance, "Bella Ciao" originated from Italian resistance — first, rice laborers resisting mistreatment at work, and later, partisans resisting fascism. In Money Heist, the song rallies the crew behind The Professor as they defiantly challenge the system. It's an echo that reminds the robbers that it is not just about the heist. It's about fighting against injustice in a Robin Hood-like rebellion. It is about facing a rigged system head-on. A system that takes away a three-year-old baby from her mother, Nairobi (Alba Flores), after it fails to protect her, blaming her instead for its own corruption that left her hopeless. But it also reminds the thieves in the halls and the tunnels of the heist that freedom will come at a price, and there will be times they will say "Bella Ciao" ("Goodbye Beautiful") to each other for the sake of the common goal. And with it, the public in the series and the audience are united with the robbers and bellowing with them, "Bella Ciao," in their resistance.
